The Santa Fe Community Orchestra will have its first concert of the 2024-2025 season Sunday, October 13, at 1:30 PM at the Scottish Rite Temple in Santa Fe. The of the orchestra will be led by conductor Dan Whisler in a program of Shostakovich, Chee, and Chabrier.
The concert is free of charge and tickets are not required.
Emmanuel Chabrier’s romantic interpretation of Spanish music, España, was inspired by his tour of Spain in 1882. With its rhythmic dances and voluptuous melodies, the work was widely acclaimed. De Falla did not think any Spanish composer had succeeded in achieving so genuine a version of the jota, and Gustav Mahler declared it to be “the start of modern music” to musicians of the New York Philharmonic.
Written by Diné (Navajo) classical pianist and composer, Connor Chee, the Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra was commissioned by Yakama bassoonist Dr. Jacqueline Wilson, who will perform the work with the SFCO.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a work of profound emotional depth and musical ingenuity, was composed in 1937 under the strict artistic constraints of Stalin’s Soviet regime. Shostakovich incorporates elements of modernism, dissonance, sarcasm and defiance into his musical language, masterfully evoking the power of the human spirit to transcend oppression.
Our musicians are made up of community members from Santa Fe, Los Alamos, LasVegas, Taos, and beyond. The majority of our members spend their working lives in other professions, from lawyers to teachers to doctors to scientists and engineers. Music is a passionate pursuit for us, and we are excited to share our love for these works with the community.
Donations are always appreciated, either at the door or at sfco.org/donate.
